My Teaching Philosophy

In the classroom, students and I think carefully about how to apply the tools and techniques established by historians to approach the modern world with complexity and an eagerness to learn as much as possible about the people around us. Teaching and research work hand-in-hand, and my own engagement with the historical material helps me to relate how rewarding and important the experience of encountering so many different people and ideas from the past is to students. After all, helping students gain an appreciation for the wonderful diversity and multiculturalism of the past is surely the best approach for a brighter future and a crucial component of Northwood’s global approach to learning.

Why I am at NU

I value my position here at Northwood. The university’s multicultural atmosphere and global emphasis fits well with my approach to research and teaching, introducing students and faculty to a wide range of ideas and perspectives from around the world. I enjoy working with faculty whose expertise in diverse fields and occupations makes them valuable resources to our students and fellow faculty members. The driven and career-focused students here at Northwood push themselves to excel inside the classroom and beyond, and they push faculty to find new and interesting ways to encourage their best work.
